The saying goes that men think about the dirty deed every 7 seconds--adding up to 8,000 times a day! But, a new study is putting that stereotype to bed. KGO gives us the details.
“According to researchers at Ohio State, young men don't think about sex every seven seconds. In fact, researchers say they only think about it 19 times a day. That's less than once an hour.”
Researchers had 300 college-aged men and women record their thoughts for about a week to find out how often they thought about sex. KSBI has the number on women’s brains.
“Women, though, only think about sex about 10 times a day.”
“I don't know about that.”
A writer for Live Science points out-- a reliance on self-reporting--
plus a small sample--
means the study is pretty limited.
“People tend not to have isolated thoughts. The data also doesn't show whether an individual thought is a one-second passing notion or a full-on 10-minute sexual fantasy. The study was limited to college students.”
But The Telegraph quotes the researcher, who says even considering the study’s limitations -- it may be time to throw out the old stereotypes about how often guys and gals think about sex.
"When a man hears a statement like that, he might think there's something wrong with him because he's not spending that much time thinking about sexuality, and when women hear about this, if they spend significant time thinking about sex they might think there's something wrong with them."
The study also found sexuality -- rather than gender -- is the best predictor of the frequency of risque thoughts. A blogger for The Frisky explains.
“Women only think about sex less on average because, as a gender, we are generally more uncomfortable with our sexuality. So it’s social and not necessarily biological. Very interesting. I wonder if the same goes for daily thoughts of food. I just thought about lunch four times while I was writing this. That can’t be normal.”
And if you’re wondering what men think about most after they’re done thinking about sex, according to the study, it’s sleep and food.
