After a long and bitter battle, Mel Gibson and ex-girlfriend -- Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva -- have reached a settlement.

Gibson will pay Grigorieva $750,000-- and will allow mother and child to stay in their mansion. HLN has more.

“They will stay there until she turns 18, then the mansion gets sold and the proceeds go to her in trust. They get joint custody of Lucia and she also gets child support for Lucia, as Mel Gibson also pays child support for his other children all in equal amounts. And here’s the key: both have to stay silent. No more releasing of these phone calls or anything like that.”

After a January 2010 fight with Grigorieva, Gibson was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery. He pleaded no contest earlier this year.

The case became an international story after recordings of racist and sexist rants by Gibson were leaked to website RadarOnline.

TMZ reports-- the six figure settlement is actually significantly less than an amount offered before.

The site alleges Oksana rejected a $15 million settlement because she did not want Gibson to have unsupervised contact with their child.

“In reality, sources connected to the case tell TMZ, the real reason Oksana walked away from the settlement is because she was advised she could get a lot more than $15 million because of the alleged physical abuse she claims she suffered at the hands of Mel.”

Despite the settlement, The New York Times’ Media Decoder blog notes, neither side can claim victory in this very public battle.

"The peace deal followed a battle that was waged both inside and outside the courtroom, and that damaged both Mr. Gibson, who slipped from the pedestal as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and Ms. Grigorieva, an aspiring musician who was accused of having tried to extort money from Mr. Gibson by leaking tapes of his angry rants."
