First, it was a blood-soaked “Paparazzi” performance. Then, it was the ‘Meat Dress.’ And at this year’s VMA’s, popstar and professional troublemaker Lady Gaga topped herself by sending her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, in her place.
Why wasn’t Gaga at the MTV awards show herself? When asked by a reporter, her on-again, off-again lover ‘Jo,’ explained. World Monitor TV has it.
LADY GAGA: “She’s just really f***ing pissed at me right now. She said, **** you, if you really love me you’ll go instead of me and you’ll get in that spotlight. So I did.”
A style expert tells ABC she wonders if Gaga’s performance could signal the beginning of a new career for the star.
“It was West Side Story, ‘when you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way,’ you know? She even had, instead of this spray tan, this spray dirt all over the shirt. She kept in character, she just... you didn’t even know it was her. Amazing. I think she has some acting in her future. If she didn’t, this was a way to kind of put her on the map as an actor. She was in character the entire night.”
In its ‘Winners and Losers’ show review, Entertainment Weekly called Lady Gaga a ‘Split Decision,’ saying...
“You could argue that Gaga’s decision to spend the night in her drag persona, ‘Jo Calderone,’ was awkward and annoying, a joke that went too long. And you’d be right... still, give Gaga credit for doing something different. Also, Jo-Gaga got some of the best lines of the night: Don’t act like your TV didn’t explode when she/he introduced Britney Spears by saying, ‘I used to hang posters of her on my wall and touch myself.’”
And what was Britney’s reaction to “Jo’s” confession and subsequent attempt to kiss the pop princess? A little stunned. Here’s what she told MTV:
BRITNEY SPEARS: “It was interesting, her character. We just kind of got onstage and felt it out - we didn’t know what was going on. She’s in full character, yes, definitely.”
ClevverTV argues-Gaga was doing exactly what she should have on an awards show: entertain.
“Even during the You and I performance, wouldn’t you say it was sung with more of a masculine tone in her voice? Definitely. But you could still hear Gaga beneath it all. That was so interesting. I thought it was awesome. It’s an entertainment show, it was very entertaining, so cheers to you Gaga.”
Fox News, however, pointed out that the act was too long and could actually hurt Gaga’s popularity in the long run.
“Gaga’s shtick wore out its welcome in the first two minutes. In her effort to be original and run away from the cube hat wearing copycats, like Katy Perry, I think she might have pushed the audience too far.”
