Tim Curley. Gary Schultz. Graham Spanier. Joe Paterno. Could assistant coach Mike McQueary be the next guy fired in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State? Apparently not. Here’s Penn State interim coach Tom Bradley on McQueary’s status for Saturday’s game.
“Will Mike McQueary be coaching in Saturday’s game, and if so will he be on the sideline or in the press box? Right now Mike McQueary will be coaching on Saturday. That will be a game time decision where he is.” (ESPN)
Many people are puzzled by the move. They don’t want him watching the game from the sidelines, but from his couch. The anchors at WLS can’t believe it.
“McQueary, who saw the act and did not step in, he should be fired immediately. They fired the president and Joe Paterno. How is Mike McQueary going to coach on Saturday? How do you see this happen in a shower?"
"Is he still on the coaching staff?"
"Yes."
"Let’s move on…”
On ESPN, Trevor Matich weighs in, saying if you’re going to get rid of Joe, why not McQueary?
“I can’t imagine why they would have him on the sideline I just can’t…He had an opportunity. He, McQueary, to be a hero. He had an opportunity to stop this thing... I can’t imagine why if you’re going to get rid of Joe, why you would have a guy that’s so clearly associated with this molestation.”
But WCAU says, why stop at McQueary? It’s time to clean house.
“Mike McQueary will be on the field Saturday. Don’t tell me that the rest of that coaching staff, Tom Bradley who’s now coach, Tom Bradley now coach has been there over 30 years, don’t tell me in that university and that coaching staff he didn’t have an inkling of what was going on. If you want to swift action, all the coaches go.”
A Bleacher Report blogger is taking a more realistic approach. He is one of many writers saying McQueary should resign now.
“Quitting is the responsible thing to do here. McQueary needs to realize that his presence is not doing the university any favors. If he is truly that committed to his job, he has to realize that.”
