Littleton, Colorado sits in shock after a man opened fire on middle school students. Two students were shot and injured before a teacher disarmed the shooter.

ABC News points out the situation is all too familiar.

"Columbine High where two teenage gunmen killed 12 students and a teacher in 1999 is less than three miles away. These latest pictures of anxious parents hugging their kids, a massive police response, and students running for cover, were eerily familiar to the scene 11 years ago."

In light of Columbine, Colorado schools have already prepared teachers for situations like this.

REPORTER: "Benke says he was prepared."

BENKE: "When we used to have drills and things like that with students. I said 'look, if something happens I hope I can do something.'" (MSNBC)

CBS spoke with heroic teacher David Benke to find out what was going through his head.

REPORTER: "Witnesses say seventh grade math teacher David Benke moved towards the suspect.

BENKE: "I’m not sure whether it was courage or stupidity."

REPORTER: "Even as the gunman kept firing."

BENKE: "Unfortunately he got another round off."

REPORTER: "And tackled him as he demonstrated on my colleague."

BENKE: "I grabbed him by the front like this and then we we're kind of dancing around for a while."

REPORTER: "Until police arrived."

KUSA highlights Benke's modesty, while KDVR points out how appreciative Littleton locals are for his heroic actions.

REPORTER: "Benke also told me that he wishes he could've stopped this shooter before anyone got hurt. From the sheriff to the parents at school, many people consider this seventh grade math teacher a hero. But not him."

BENKE: "I don’t, I don’t think I am."

REPORTER: "It was his day to watch students as they loaded on buses when he heard a firecracker sound." KDVR:

REPORTER: "As quickly as Dr. David Benke acted, his students and neighbors reacted."

BUS DRIVER: "It looked like he just went ahead and risked everything."

NEIGHBOR: "Its just amazing that somebody can actually put their own life in danger to save other peoples' lives."

STUDENT: "Just, I guess, charging the guy, taking him down, that's big. He deserves the title of hero."
