It’s a uniform war! College football has seen its share of jaw-dropping jerseys. Monday night against Miami, the Maryland Terrapins raised the bar:
“The Terps showed off their new uniforms, modeled after the Maryland state flag. They wore turtle helmets in warmups. Then when they took the field wearing those Maryland state flag unis and helmets. There was some surprise, particularly from folks like LeBron James, who tweeted, “OH GOSH! Maryland uniforms. #Ewwwwww.”
Some choice words from Twitter users: ugly, brutal, vomit. The Deseret News’ Brad Rock agrees -- these unis badly missed the mark:
“You thought Oregon had crazy football uniforms, with the bird wings or checks on the shoulder pads, and the countless combinations. Or perhaps you thought Penn State's ultra-retro look was waaaaay too old. Say hello to an entirely new category: WORST. UNIFORM. EVER.”
Despite the sudden surge of Maryland fashion critics, SB Nation DC’s Martin Shatzer likes the new look:
“As a life-long Maryland resident, I loved the uniforms. I take pride in my state, and so it’s great to see my state’s flag represented on ESPN … In fact, my only complaint about the uniforms is that the Terrapins won’t be wearing them more often.”
Style points aside -- the uniforms did their job. So says ESPN’s Skip Bayless:
“I thought they were shockingly hideous. But they will generate more publicity for the Maryland football program than anything that school has done on the field in the last 70 years.”
Publicity is nice -- but as the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star’s Steve DeShazo writes, it takes a backseat to winning.
“Maryland … unveiled enough new uniform combinations that the Terps wore completely different pants, jerseys and helmets for warmups and the game. But that's all sound and fury. As Joe Paterno has proved for half a century with the country's plainest uniforms, winning never goes out of style.”
