Celebrations lit up all across Washington state early Thursday morning as residents welcomed in the newly instated legalization of marijuana.

“As of today, possession of small amounts of marijuana is legal in the state of Washington. ‘It feels so good.’” [VIDEO: CBS]

“Several dozen hard core smokers showed up here to the base of the Space Needle, a symbol of the city and of the state, to light up at the stroke of midnight.” [VIDEO: CNN]

Although marijuana is now legal, those smokers who rolled one up and came out to show their support were still breaking the law because it is actually illegal to smoke in public.
 

“The new law restricts criminal penalties for adults over 21 carrying at least one ounce of marijuana. ... And if you’re thinking about sparking one up in the car that too is a no go. Smoking and driving is considered an impairment.”

But while marijuana is legal in Washington, possession is still a federal crime. According to RT the Obama administration has yet to mention how it will react to the new measure — only saying...

“ … it remains “firmly committed to enforcing the controlled substances act.” Steve Fox, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project called it is a “failed policy,” saying...

“The increasingly strong national support for making marijuana legal demonstrates that the writing is on the wall … Marijuana prohibition’s days are numbered. The Obama administration cannot stop history. If it interferes in the implementation of these new laws, it will only unnecessarily prolong the chaos of an uncontrolled market.”

Washington residents also celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage on Thursday morning.
