Breaking news – Police have made an arrest in the case of a New York woman who was burned alive inside an elevator Saturday. 47-year old Jerome Isaac turned himself into police on Sunday. Here’s MSNBC with the details.
Alex Witt: “Right now, New York City police are questioning a man about the fiery murder of a woman who was deliberately burned to death inside a Brooklyn elevator...”
Michelle Franzen: “They were hoping to catch the suspect but, evidently, overnight someone walked into the police station and identified themselves as the man who was responsible for dousing a woman inside the elevator with some kind of accelerent and then setting her ablaze...”
The brutal murder took place inside of 73-year-old Deloris Gillespie’s apartment building as she returned home from the grocery store. One of Gillespie’s neighbors described the aftermath to CNN.
Witness/Neighbor: “I smell smoke like an electrical fire. I got back outside, I see smoke pouring out of the elevator. I go back in my apartment, call 911. Myself and someone from the sixth floor, we were running down knocking on everyone’s door to get out...”
Isaac told police he attacked Gillespie because she owed him $2,000. NY1 explains how the murder took place.
Vivian Lee: “Isaac lives about two blocks from where the fire started in a prospect heights building. Sources say Isaac was waiting for 73-year old Deloris Gillespie when she returned to her apartment building yesterday afternoon around 4.”
Everything was caught on tape by two security cameras. The Telegraph reports:
“...The man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her ‘sort of methodically’ over her head and parts of her body. … Then... the suspect pulled out a barbecue-style lighter, used it to ignite a rag in a bottle and then waited for a few seconds before using the flames to set her afire, causing smoke to fill the elevator.”
Isaac has been charged with murder and arson.
