There are a lot of situations in which dialing 9-1-1 is absolutely necessary ... Fixing your iPhone is not one of them. An Illinois man called 9-1-1 because his iPhone wasn’t working. CNN has more.
Reporter: "Skopec didn’t call 9-1-1 once, he didn’t call twice, he called five times. Call number 1:"
Dispatcher: "You’re tying up a phone line."
Skopec: "I know. I know I’m dong that. But it ain’t my fault. It’s AT&T’s fault."
Reporter: "Now Skopec did have a reason for calling 9-1-1, he said it was the only number his phone could dial."
Reporter: "Skopec’s final words to the dispatcher?"
Skopec: "Alright, whatever. Go to hell."
Dispatcher: "You’re really a very nice person, sir."
The police went to his location and found the man highly intoxicated- Further proof it’s never a good idea to drunk dial. A blogger for The Stir offers a solution.
“Who knows if his iPhone was really even broken? Maybe he was calling 911 from it and the whole thing was a drunk dial sham! If that was the case, he could have avoided the whole thing if only he had installed the Don't Dial app before his drinking binge, which blocks certain numbers before you go out boozin'!”
The 9-1-1 tapes were released to the public this week. A writer for WebProNews believes the calls don’t just highlight the man’s drunken stupor, but how nice the dispatcher is.
"Because Mr. Skopec decided to get hammered drunk and try to work his iPhone, we the public are given the gift of the 911 tapes... Not only are they great because Skopec is such an idiot, but it shows just how patient 911 operators can be in the face of someone who is obviously wasting their time. Amazing."
According to the phone records, the dispatcher asked if the man had been drinking and he responded with, “No, I’m just not very smart.” And as a blogger for The Frisky writes, there is still an unanswered question.
“Skopec...is no fumbling frat boy, either — the man is 48 years old! This drunk dialer was charged with obstructing and resisting a police officer. The great mystery still stands: on what phone did he make the emergency calls?”
Skopec was released from jail and is due to appear in court November 18.
