Hidden in plain sight.
A Chicago man and former commodities trader -- thought to have died more than 30 years ago -- found alive in Las Vegas.
KABC has more.
“Arthur Jones disappeared as gambling debts piled up he left a wife and three children, but now he has been found working under a fake name at the casino in Las Vegas. Investigators say Jones disappeared because he owed money to the mob.”
In fact -- authorities thought Jones had been killed by the mob -- and according to Fox News -- was declared legally dead in 1986 -- after which the family he left behind collected Social Security.
KTRK tracks his path.
“From Illinois, he said he moved to Florida and lived as Richard Lay. Two years later, Jones headed to California where he settled in for nearly a decade as Richard Sanders. Next up, Nevada, where for the last 20 years, he has been known as Joseph Richard Sandelli, over the years, he has been arrested a half dozen times.”
But it wasn’t until Jones went to renew his driver license that he was caught -- using a Social Security number that wasn’t his.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal snapped this photo of Jones’ home in Vegas -- where he lived as Joseph Sandelli.
The Review-Journal dug into how Jones was able to secure employment at a Vegas casino:
“His fraudulent Social Security number was linked to the criminal history he had compiled under aliases since 1979, when his fingerprints were first recorded, but there was no criminal record under his true name. Although Jones had been arrested under several different names, this also didn't raise any alarms.”
Said a rep from the state’s Gaming Control Board:
"You'd be amazed how many people have aliases or a.k.a.'s who work in the industry, whether they're married names or nicknames, whatever...”
According to the Associated Press -- the 72-year-old is set for a court hearing on August 23. He faces four felony counts of identity theft and fraud.
