Malala Yousafzai Donates $50,000 Prize To Rebuilding Schools

Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai is continuing to prioritize education. She just donated $50,000 towards reconstructing schools in Gaza.

“Let’s make sure every child gets quality education ... One book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world.” (Video via International Business Times)

That was also her sentiment last year, speaking at the United Nations...

“One teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.”

Since then, she’s won the Nobel Peace Prize. And now, in Sweden on Wednesday, she received the World Children’s prize for fighting for children's rights, and told the crowd she’d be giving her entire $50,000 prize to the U.N. so it can be used to help rebuild 65 schools in Gaza.

The Guardian quotes her: “The needs are overwhelming – more than half of Gaza’s population is under 18 years of age. They want and deserve quality education, hope and real opportunities to build a future.”

At 17, Malala was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and now she’s the only person ever to get the children’s prize and the Nobel in the same year. (Video via CNN)

The World Children’s Prize is chosen by organizers, but also by a global vote from children.
