Several of the top US Internet service providers have agreed to start cracking down on media piracy and copyright infringement. The list includes big names such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon. CNET reports...

“Leaders from the movie, television, music and Internet service provider communities today announced a landmark agreement on a common framework for ‘Copyright Alerts,” [which] ‘will educate and notify Internet subscribers when their Internet service accounts possibly are being misused for online content theft.’”

The new system will work on a “six strike,” basis. According to the New York Times...

“These warnings escalate from simple email notifications to a set of ‘mitigation measures,’ like slowed connections or block a from Web surfing altogether. As the steps progress, a user must acknowledge to his I.S.P. that he understands the notice, and the user can also contest the complaint.”

Some hail the Copyright Alert system as a practical way to end piracy. Wired quotes Verizon’s attorney as saying...

“‘This is a sensible approach to the problem of online-content teft and, importantly, one that respects the privacy and rights of our subscribers...’”

And a solution to internet piracy has been long- desired. According to Politico...

“...content theft costs the U.S. economy more than 373,000 jobs, $16 billion in lost earnings and $3 billion in lost federal, state and local government tax revenue.”

Politico also reports- both ISPs and copyright owners say that when most people realize they might be illegally pirating copyrighted material, they stop.
