Game of the century or snoozefest?
The number one LSU Tigers tamed number two Alabama Saturday night, in a nine to six defensive struggle. Now the sports world debates: Do the Tide deserve a rematch in the national title game? A writer from Fox Sports says spare us the boring outcome.
“Only a lover of solid defensive scheming and execution (a football geek) walked away thinking the LSU-Alabama game was the Game of the Century, or even the game of the year. It was a soccer match, and we all know Americans love soccer.”
Alabama only dropped two spots to number four in Sunday’s AP Poll. LSU held steady at number one, followed by Oklahoma State and Stanford. An analyst from CBS Sports says there are other undefeated teams more deserving of a shot at the Crimson Tide.
“Aside from everyone in the south who will be clamoring for a rematch, no I don’t think you will have a lot of people clamoring for that. As Randy just mentioned, Boise, Stanford may go undefeated, and I think they will in the Pac-12, so no.”
The rematch question was a hot topic leading up to the big game. Earlier in the week, ESPN’s Michael Smith said even with one loss, he would still put the loser of Alabama-LSU ahead of a group of undefeated teams.
“A one-loss SEC team to me is more deserving of a Boise State, or even a Stanford if they go undefeated. Oklahoma State is the only other team, if they run the table, that I would put in the National Championship game over the loser of this game.”
For now, the Tide can only wait for Stanford and Oklahoma State to fall. And if they do, college football and the BCS will again be covered in controversy. A writer from the Florida Times-Union says the BCS was put in place to avoid a season ending rematch.
“Many say college football amounts to a season-long playoff…We don’t have the NCAA choosing 68 teams. We have a BCS system choosing two. Let’s pick two who haven’t faced off already.”
