Elizabeth Taylor’s jewels are as iconic as she is. And now, they’re going to be auctioned off at Christie’s America.
Head of the Jewelry Department for the store tells NBC’s Today Show, jewelry was one of the late actress’ true loves.
“This is where you see Elizabeth Taylor with all her love of the jewelry that she owned. This was a gift from Mike Todd ... They were by the poolside and she was playing around and in comes Mike Todd with swim trunks and red Cartier boxes and he puts it all around her and she loves it.”
Despite initial speculation over what was going to happen to the collection, New York Magazine confirms the sale will take place at Christies in a series of auctions. But that won’t be the only item of Taylor’s on sale.
“They've struck a deal with Elizabeth Taylor's family to sell the late actress's famous jewelry collection...as well as some of her artworks, clothing, and other belongings.”
Although collectors will be excited for the auction, a writer for iVillage points out one group might not be so thrilled - her family.
“The profits from future Elizabeth Taylor merchandise, film re-releases and product sales are still up for grabs... Even if it's only her family fighting over money, that could still be a big argument.”
A writer for Popeater compares the situation to that of other great stars.
"The one thing she didn't do was understand that, much like Elvis and Michael Jackson, she might be worth more in death... this is what has already started to cause friction.”
In life, Liz Taylor devoted time and money to charities and health research. The Washington Post reports, her auction proves no different-- since proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
For an idea of how much to expect, the Post runs a comparison...
“Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s estate fetched $35 million at Sotheby’s in 1993. ... Taylor’s jewelry was reportedly worth $100 million at her death. Her estate was valued at $500 million to $1 billion.”
But who can put a price on love? The Telegraph shares a piece of Liz’s memoir, where she writes...
"I'm here to take care of them and to love them. When I die and they go off to auction I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home."
