Libyans Appear To Have Claimed U.S. Embassy Swimming Pool

Militants have reportedly stormed an American government complex in Libya, although maybe stormed isn't the right word. 

A video uploaded to Youtube Sunday showed men fooling around and swimming in a pool at what militants say is a U.S. embassy building in Tripoli. 

But the U.S. ambassador to Libya seemed to contravene those claims, tweeting, "The YouTube appears to be a residential annex of the US mission but cannot say definitively since not there." And adding, "To my knowledge & per recent photos the US Embassy Tripoli chancery & compound is now being safeguarded and has not been ransacked."

It's hard to say for sure, in part because the U.S. evacuated its embassy staff from Tripoli a little more than a month ago, relocating them to neighboring Tunisia. (Video via ABC)

MICHAEL SMERCONISH, CNN: "The Pentagon had for weeks pressed to evacuate the embassy after the tripoli airport came under repeated attacks by militias... 

BARBARA STARR: Make no mistake, the embassy complex is shuttered now."

Either way the militants didn't look terribly threatening in the video, and from what could be seen, the compound looked largely intact. 

As The New York Times Cairo Bureau chief tweeted, it was less of an outright attack on the embassy and looked more like, "some libyans have found the pool at the abandoned US Embassy compound in Tripoli."

And one Youtube user even commented, "seems like any old house party in Los Angeles to me."

It seems a far cry from the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi that killed ambassador Christopher Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. (Video via The Guardian)

Still, you wouldn't know it from some of the coverage. 

FOX NEWS: "You've got the situation in Benghazi, now you have the capital, Tripoli, being taken over by the Islamic radicals."

AL JAZEERA: "To Libya, and armed militia groups have overrun the U.S. embassy in the capital, Tripoli."

​Libya has seen continued fighting over the past couple of years since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
