Libyan rebels overran Muammar Gaddafi’s compound in Tripoli on Tuesday. CNN reports-- the rebels considered taking the capital city “a major victory” over the longtime leader and his 42-year reign.
“I'm inside the compound. An historic day. The rebels feel this is a massive victory, psychologically, over Gaddafi. They are yelling and screaming that Libya is freed.”
After pouring into the compound, rebels burned the building and destroyed Gaddafi’s statue.
Yet the victory did not come easily. While garrisoned in Gaddafi’s stronghold, the rebels continued to exchange fire with the regime’s loyalists. Fox News has the video.
“I can tell you there's a tremendous amount of gunfire, small arms fire going on street to street. Some of that gunfire appears to be savatory, but some appears to be gun battles. Much of the fighting today has been on or around colonel Gaddafi’s compound.”
But the colonel himself-- is still AWOL.
Reuters reported Tuesday-- a Russian official says he has talked to Gaddafi’s by phone and was told he is still in Tripoli and has no plan to leave.
Here’s MSNBC with more.
“We just got news from the Pentagon that says that they just believe the Libyan leader is somewhere still in Libya and fears gun fires have been breaking out throughout the day there.”
U.S. Senator John McCain tells CBS -- he was confident the Gaddafi reign would soon come to an end through joint international force-- despite the quote- “PR coux” performed by Gaddafi’s son Monday.
“I don’t think there is any doubt of the eventual outcome. And we think we ought really be turning our attention to national reconciliation to not having revenge and killings going on.”
