Kindle Fire might be on its way to becoming the most-wanted gadget this coming holiday season according to leaked images of Amazon’s inventory management system.
“[The] leaked shoots show that orders for Amazon’s Android-based tablet are racking up at an average rate of over 2,000 units per hour … If this level of consumer demand for the Kindle Fire continues, Amazon will have 2.5 million preorders for the device before it officially goes on sale on November 15.” (Cult of Android)
The $199 price of the Kindle Fire surprised many and it’s thought to be driving the sales, but a writer for CNET notes -- tablet prices were already falling.
“In truth, this trend was already in the works for months. Hewlett-Packard's TouchPad fire sale was the most dramatic example... While the TouchPad at $99 remains an anomaly, and a largely unprofitable one at that, it is a signal that consumers aren't willing to pay $500 for just any tablet.”
And according to Morningstar, Amazon has been building a content-based strategy to make this launch successful.
“They are not going to be making any money on the tablet itself: it’s all about the content sales, and they already have the relationships in place with all the major media companies, they are streaming video through it. It really is more of a customer acquisition tool.”
Some tech media are speculating that the Fire might finally give Apple some competition in the tablet market. So, Google’s gotta be excited for that, right? Well -- tech blog Mobile Opportunity says -- that might not be the case.
“The problem is that Amazon is using Android as just an OS, not using the Google-branded services and application store that Google layers on top of the OS... What Amazon did with Android is very threatening to Google, and so you're not likely to hear a lot of supportive words from them.”
Regardless of Google’s concern, the initial sales figures look good, writes Mashable. At the very least, the Kindle Fire won’t be a flop.
