Concussions can cause debilitating mental diseases later in life--the NFL knows this…now. But a new lawsuit claims the league knew the truth and hid it for 90 years.

A group of 75 players and their wives present the allegation in an exclusive on TMZ.

"The NFL knew as early as the 1920's of the harmful effects on a player's brain of concussions; however, until June of 2010 they concealed these facts from coaches, trainers, players and the public."

So, has the NFL been turning a blind eye to an obvious reality? Pro Football Talk says proving that allegation will be difficult.

"Clear links between concussions and long-term health problems have been established only recently, and the league has responded fairly aggressively (especially after a shot across the bow from Congress) to the problem."

The risk associated with concussions in organized football isn’t exactly a new topic.  Still, doctor Anne McKee told the New York Times back in 2010, many players didn't realize the extent of these problems, because the onset of related health issues comes much later.

"What usually happens is the individual plays the sport in their teens and their twenties. Most individuals retire by their early 30s, and they aren't symptomatic at that point. In fact, most cases don't become symptomatic until a decade or so later. So it's in their 40s, or even their 50s,  that they start to have symptoms. You're not thinking wow, this is from those head injuries that he had 10, 20 years ago."

The NFL admitted there was a connection last season, implementing more stringent concussion regulations. Even so, players like James Harrison say, he'll take his chances; he has a family to feed.

"If a guy has a choice of hitting me high or low, hit me in the head and I’ll pay your fine. Just don’t hit me in the knee, ’cause that’s life-threatening. How’m I going to feed my family if I can’t run?”

The case is still several years and millions of legal fee dollars away from resolution, Yahoo Sports reports--but if it gains some momentum, it could change the game forever.

“It's too early to tell whether this will be a blip in the NFL's legal history or signal the start of a monumental shift in the game. If the lawsuit gains any traction, it could very well be the latter.”

Before the lockout ends, owners and players will have to address retired player benefits, according to Pro Football Talk. An NFL spokesman told the website they had no knowledge of the lawsuit, but would quote, "vigorously contest any claims of this kind."
