After fumbling a punt that set up the Giant’s game-winning field goal, 49ers receiver Kyle Williams quickly became the target of death-threats on Twitter. The San Francisco Chronicle discovered some of the tweets, including:
“@KyleWilliams_10. I hope you, youre wife, kids and family die, you deserve it”
“@KyleWilliams_10 you should jump off the golden gate bridge for that one”
“@KyleWilliams_10 HOPE U RUN n2 A BULLET DA WAY U RAN INTO DAT BALL…”
Initially some speculated Williams’ dinged-up shoulder might have played a role in Williams’ two muffed punts during the game. But 23-year-old Williams is owning up to the criticism, saying he deserves 100 percent of the blame. A writer for the Pigskin Report has sympathy...
“He has played two seasons in the NFL after coming out of the Arizona State Sun Devils collegiate team. He is still just a kid. Haven’t we evolved more than that as a society? Unfortunately, we clearly have not, and that is disturbing.”
Meanwhile, an anchor on WFLX asks if this highlights one of sports society’s major flaws.
“Is this part of this, the Twitter death threats, is it part of the society where you get a trophy no matter what and that nobody can accept the fact that somebody has to win and somebody has to lose?”
And Bleacher Report columnist Josh Martin takes a swing at the fan cred of those who made the threats, writing...
“If you’re a true 49ers fan, through and through, apologize to Kyle Williams for your own negligence and offer him some modicum of comfort and support.”
Williams’ teammates have also taken to Twitter -- but they’re offering support. Most notably, 49ers kicker David Akers tweeted:
“I didn't think this would happen but ppl need to get a grip! Leave Kyle alone! We win and lose as a team. Not from one person or play.”
No charges have yet been filed over the threats.
