Kim Kardashian is no stranger to the spotlight. But the amount of commotion she caused in Bahrain this weekend was a first for the reality star.

Kardashian visited the Middle Eastern country to meet with fans while promoting her “Millions of Milkshakes” franchise near the capital city of Manama. Here’s ABC News.

“But its not just fans reacting to Kardashian in the Middle East. Saturday, riot police in Bahrain fired tear gas with more than 50 hardline Islamic protesters denouncing her presence.”

The Gulf Daily News reports earlier this week, Sunni members of parliament floated around a motion calling the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star “an actress with an extremely bad reputation.”

But Kardashian didn’t appear to be too fazed from the protest..taking to Twitter to thank the country’s unelected leader.

“Thanks Sheikh Khalifa for your amazing hospitality. I’m in love with the Kingdom of Bahrain.”

Another reason Kardashian’s visit got people up in arms?

The US State Department lists Bahrain, along with North Korea and Syria, among the world’s worst human rights abusers for its use of tear gas against Shiites, torture of detainees and its violent crackdown on political demonstrators.

Kardashian’s trip to Bahrain comes just weeks after she sparked an outrage for tweeting that she was “praying for Israel” during the week-long violence in Gaza that resulted in hundreds of casualties, a majority of whom were Palestinians.

So, aside from outrage over Kardashian’s “bad reputation” just what was it that sparked the protest in Bahrain? A writer for Gawker speculates.

“Some conservative Islamic citizens in Bahrain were worried that Kanye West's muse would cause their country to become a place where everyone films sex tapes, promotes custom milkshakes, and slaps a "K" in front of everything that they possibly kan.”
