Did Kim Jong Un order the execution of a former girlfriend?

According to the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, a singer believed to be the dictator’s ex and 11 others from North Korea’s Unhasu Orchestra were publicly executed by a firing squad Aug. 20. (Via WTOL)

Apparently the group had been accused of filming themselves having sex and then selling the tapes, violating the country’s laws against pornography.

Kim Jong Un reportedly met singer Hyon Song-wol approximately a decade ago before he was married, and the two struck up a relationship until Un’s father Kim Jong-il reportedly demanded an end to it. (Via New York Daily News)

Hyon went on to marry a North Korean military officer while Un went on to marry another singer from the group.

However, there were rumors the pair continued to see each other even after Un was married. (Via Chosun Ilbo)

The Telegraph reports Un’s wife objected to the continuing high profile of Hyon, who was responsible for a string of hit patriotic songs.

If true, an expert on North Korean affairs tells The Telegraph he believes the execution may have been politically motivated or demanded by Un’s wife.

"If these people had only made pornographic videos, then it is simply not believable that their punishment was execution. … They could have been made to disappear into the prison system there instead.” (Via The Telegraph)

According to Chosun Ilbo, the families of the singers were reportedly forced to watch the executions and have now been sent to prison camps under North Korea’s law of guilty by association.
