Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw may have thrown away his chances of a Cy Young Award after tossing an inside pitch to Gerardo Parra.
“Clayton Kershaw allowed one hit through five innings, but in the sixth he hits Gerardo Parra. Remember, Kershaw was among the Dodger players who took issue with Parra admiring his homerun Tuesday...well, he was thrown out by umpire Bill Welke, as was skipper Don Mattingly.” (ESPN)
The pitch that hit Parra sparked debate about Kershaw’s chances of winning the Cy Young award. Los Angeles Times writer Bill Plaschke says the pitch only hurt Parra.
“...some might think his Cy Young bid was derailed, but I propose that it was cemented. At a moment where he would have been excused the greatest of selfishness, he threw one for the team. By hitting Parra, he had everything to lose but his teammates' respect, yet clearly decided he would rather have that respect.”
Fellow Cy Young contender Roy Halladay pitched a shutout against the Astros while Kershaw was being ejected. A USA Today writer says the ejection could lead to more punishment for Kershaw.
“...don't expect much leniency from Torre and Co. at MLB's command center. A suspension could cost Kershaw a start down the stretch; last night's ejection, coming after he threw just 63 pitches, already cost him the chance to lower his ERA and pad his NL-leading strikeout total.”
And a Fox Sports commentator says it’s the umpires who are hurting the pitcher’s chances at a Cy Young by instantly ejecting him instead of issuing a warning.
“He went away from Parra in his first at-bat, and he got a double. I gotta get in on ya, and if one gets away, that’s fine, you know. That wasn’t the time to drill him, and there is a time to drill him, and that wasn’t it, and you need to let a guy who is fighting for a Cy Young award stay in the game and pitch.”
