Sesame Street has pulled Katy Perry’s musical number after parents complained the pop star’s outfit was too revealing.  The segment, which was posted on the Internet before it was planned to air, features Perry singing a “kid-friendly” version of her hit song Hot N Cold with Elmo. (Video: Sesame Workshop)

TIME quotes a statement from Sesame Workshop, who produces the show, on why the segment was pulled:

“Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer's opinions and particularly those of parents.”

But the anchors for NBC’s Today Show say they don’t really see what the big deal is.

“I’ve gone completely wishy-washy on this.  My first reaction was, maybe it’s not right, and now the more I look at it I think that, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”

“I don’t either.”

“I think children have seen those.”

“It almost looks like a ballerina’s outfit or something like that to me.”

“And Katy Perry’s kind of a cartoon character already.”

The blog Media Macaroni defends the segment’s removal.

“Generally, I agree with the sentiment in many comments that we’re a prudish country that tends to overreact about things. On the other hand, what positive messages about sexuality are girls and boys getting from seeing a woman in a corset first thing in the morning?”

Entertainment Weekly reports Perry called her Sesame Street appearance the highlight of her career, and the blog Back Seat Cuddler says Sesame Street should take the heat for parents’ outrage.

“I think it’s absurd that Sesame Street asks Katy Perry onto the show and doesn’t lay out the ground rules or give her a costume. This is Katy Perry, haven’t they watched her videos?”

Finally, MTV’s Clutch blog says Perry’s outfit is tame compared to her usual attire, and wonders-- what exactly were people expecting?

“Katy Perry's boobs are kind of her trademark. ... So no one should have been surprised when she appeared on ‘Sesame Street’ with her jigglies on full display.... They thought it inappropriate to show toddlers part of the same body part that provides them essential nourishment.”

So what do you think?  Is Katy Perry’s outfit too risque for children’s TV, or is this much ado about nothing?
