Kanye West has gone from the front row of Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Céline shows to the backstage of his own.
The hip hop star turned fashion designer sent 23 looks down the runway, earning polite applause from the audience and mixed reviews from fashion critics.
The Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley says the private show during Paris Fashion Week just wasn’t the right venue for West’s debut.
“...it just didn't cut the mustard. It was a little overwrought: great swags of fur on a summer collection is a bit P Diddy. Some of the clothes didn't fit the models perfectly: trousers too big, too-low necklines that gaped. If you show off-schedule in London, these kinks are fine, but you can't get away with them at this level.”
And the New York Times’ fashion editor Cathy Horyn tweets -- a little attention to detail would have gone a long way.
“Next season Kanye should get a tailor so clothes might fit. Models swimming in some looks. Kills the hot look, no?”
But Film Industry Network’s Iain Alexander says - to be fair - Kanye’s vision is still evolving.
“I can’t criticize Kanye for his fashion choices because like everything, different people can interpret fashion differently... West still continues to come up with different ‘exports’ of his artistic vision.”
Does the marriage between fashion and music make much sense? The Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong says it’s just plain weird.
“Kanye West's fashion debut was like being subjected to an hour long MRI scan - but not as much fun....It was the equivalent of Karl Lagerfeld (LAH-gur-feld) launching a hip-hop career: i.e. absurd.”
