Singer John Mayer is under ferocious fire after an interview with Playboy. In the magazine, Mayer uses the “n” word, compares himself to a white supremacist and gets graphic about ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson.
We’re looking at perspectives from Perez Hilton, MSNBC, People, and Fox.
In the interview, Mayer says black women don’t find him attractive. But, he goes on to compare his manhood to white supremacist David Duke. Mayer is known for being, well, cocky, but celebrity blogger Perez Hilton doesn’t want to hear excuses.
“Congratulations, John Mayer. You have left us absolutely speechless. And repulsed. … Absolutely, absolutely despicable. Who on EARTH does he think he is?”
MSNBC’s Courtney Hazlett says Mayer is a failure as a role model.
"This is John Mayer, apparently, and this is the way he chooses to conduct himself and be a role model to people who now think that this sort of behavior and saying these things is OK. It’s just confounding to me.”
Mayer apologized via Twitter, but People magazine says many of Mayer’s millions of fans are turning on him.
“The remark didn't wash with his 3 million Twitter followers, who were unusually silent ... ‘They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole,’ one wrote.”
But FOX's commentators admit that there’s a certain appeal to Mayer’s cavalier comments, and offer a reason for his rants.
“I actually am starting to like John Mayer because of this. I used to think that he was the type of guy that pretended like he didn’t care, but really cared more than any other celebrity. But this guy, I really now believe, does not care.
Yeah. He couldn’t possibly.
Either that, or he’s got a horrible, horrible coke addiction.”
In a video posted on People.com, Mayer is seen apologizing again at his concert Wednesday night. He says he faces "constant persecution," and that he was just trying to be funny.
"In a quest to be clever, I completely forgot about the people that I love and the people that love me."
So, do you think John Mayer deserves this mad media mayhem? Or, is the problem that the press can’t take a joke?
