Jenna Bush is a new correspondent for NBC’s "The Today Show", but her work is garnering criticism.
We’re analyzing perspectives from E!, CNN, Perez Hilton and The Young Turks.
On E!, late-night host Chelsea Lately felt up to an impression.
JENNA BUSH: “We’ll meet some of the people who like to jump out of the fast lane and enjoy the slow pace of watching wildlife at the park.”
CHELSEA LATELY: “Jenna. What a fantastic report. I’m so impressed with your journalistic talents. Interesting choice to not make eye contact with the viewers.”
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton says Jenna only got the job thanks to a certain other Bush, and that she shows his characteristics.
“She certainly shares her father's eloquence and charm in front of a camera!”
When Bush first joined the staff, NBC said she was hired for her “natural presence” to cover issues like education. On CNN, Jeanne Moss is unimpressed, though HollywoodLife.com editor Bonnie Fuller says Jenna just needs more time.
JENNA BUSH: “And when you set foot in Yellowstone, everything seems to slow down.”
JEANNE MOOS: “Yeah, everything. Including her delivery.”
BUSH: “Some visitors will sit for hours and never see any wildlife or an eruption. ...”
MOOS: “There was some awkward chit-chat with the anchors.”
BUSH: “A day at work.”
MATT LAUER: “What’s the temperature there this morning, Jenna?”
BUSH: “Oh, it’s, it’s pretty cold. The gloves.”
BONNIE FULLER: “I don’t think she’s too bad. I think that she’s got potential.”
But The Young Turks say this points to a bigger problem — that the definition of “journalist” is disintegrating.
“She was hired as a reporter. She was hired as a reporter. ... The word ‘reporter’ doesn’t mean anything anymore.”
What do you think? Should people without traditional qualifications be considered journalists?
