A series of deadly attacks in southern Israel have killed at least 6 Israel soldiers near the Egyptian border. Fox News notes, the attacks appear to have been coordinated.
“This is a very sophisticate attack involving at least one anti-tank missiles used to against the bus and also some others weapons by militants down along the Egyptian border. At this time 5 dead that number can certainly grow, at least 14 people wounded in this attack”
According to Israeli radio, most passengers on the bus were soldiers heading home for the weekend. The BBC has more details on the multiple phases of the attack.
“2 or 3 gunman climbed out of a car as the bus came towards and fire on route 12 that would no fatalities we believe. Soon afterwards there has been an attack on army vehicle and there were people killed supposed for the in this is wounded fatalities from that attack. So it is still unfolding but it is clearly a big operation going on. They haven’t closing this down yet and they are still searching for the people who carry this out.”
As a result of the attacks, the Israeli government have raised the level of its national alert system. InfoTV reports the Israeli special forces and military troops pursued the terrorists and engaged in a gun battles killing some of the gunmen not far from where the bus attack occured.
CNN updates, the death toll in southern Israeli violence now stands at 13 - six Israelis and seven attackers.
While the source of the attacks has not been confirmed, some are pointing a finger at Egypt. Just last week, Egypt relocated thousands of troops into the Sinai Peninsula as part of a major operation against militants who have been increasingly active in the area. On MSNBC, an analyst points out the key behind the attack.
“Very recently, especially Prime minister mentioned in Yahoo has a warning that the ‘post Hosni Mubarak Egypt’ is simply no longer under control of the Sinai desert, Egypt that has perhaps allowed this millitant operate there. “
Egypt, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, recently stepped up security activity in the Sinai desert, which borders the Jewish state and the Gaza Strip.
