A new study finds more than 60 percent of Twitter users have become quitters after the first month of joining.
Nielsen Online data says micro-blogging site Twitter suffers from audience low retention rate, meaning more than half of the users don’t come back to the site in the following month after signing up.

“I signed up on Twitter a couple of months ago and I have been on it sparingly since. I really do not see what the big deal with Twitter is...Twitter is great for this generation of narcissism where so many people out there think we actually care about what they are doing right now.” (Nielsen Wire)BusinessWeek says the secret of success lies in the habit of the users.

“What Oprah fails is Oprah doesn’t follow anybody. So the value of Twitter is building the interaction, so what she needs to do over time is to find people to follow. Look at your friends that signed up and find people on their networks. Find reliable news sources.” (NECN)The Telegraph analyzes the accuracy of the statistics from Nielsen.
“The research is limited however as it fails to reflect how many users are choosing to access Twitter via third-party applications, such as the Tweetdeck application, bypassing signing in on Twitter.com.” (Telegraph)Finally, a PC World editor says the departure of new Twitter users might just be for the best.
“So the effect of newbies abandoning their accounts is probably a net gain for the rest of us in terms of reduced congestion on the site and fewer annoying, clueless tweets.
