Does your son like to dress up nicely? Does he like football? Was he shy as a child?- According to French Andriod app developers "Emmene Moi", answering simple questions like these will allow parents to determine whether their son is gay. Here’s CBS.
“Few are fans of the new app, sold in Google’s Android market which asks mothers 20 questions including- does their son dress well? Is his best friend a girl? Are you divorced? Depending on the answers, the program may tell you not to look the other way because your son is gay, so accept him.”
The app developers released a statement to The Huffington Post-- claiming it’s all in good fun.
“This app was conceived with a playful approach. It is not based at all on scientific research... Through humor, ‘Is My Son Gay?’ and the forthcoming novel have the sole objective of toning down/improving the situation and helping mothers to accept their sons' homosexuality.”
But despite those claims of noble intentions-- plenty of people have spoken out against the android app. Openly gay blogger Perez Hilton blasted it on his website.
“We don't care if this is a joke or not, this is an AWFUL way to perpetuate dangerous, offensive stereotypes! ... Not only are the questions wrong and bigoted, they also further baseless assumptions that carry no scientific proof about what determines sexual preference!”
And a blogger for Jezebel sarcastically brings up another criticism of the app-- where’s the girl version?
“Unfortunately, there's still no app to test your daughter for homosexuality, so if you're looking for a way to come to terms with her orientation while you're in a doctor's waiting room, you'll have come up with some offensive lesbian caricatures on your own.”
The website All Out has started an online petition for Google to remove the app -- which by the way costs about 3 bucks in the Android Market. By Wednesday afternoon, it has almost 20,000 virtual signatures.
