First the Dutch general election, then Berlin’s parliament, now the French senate. A series of victories by Center-left parties have some saying the left is gaining ground in Europe. A guest columnist in the Guardian writes the left’s victory in the French Senate could be a sign of change.

"If, as now seems likely, President Nicolas Sarkozy and the French right lose the French presidential election next spring, and this is then followed by a Social Democrat/Green victory in the German general election in early 2013, the centre of power at the heart of the European Union will have moved as well"

Mr. Sarkozy has yet to declare he will be running for office next year. Still, Euronews says this new defeat, after last year’s regional election defeat weakens his chances.

“France’s left wing opposition has won control of the upper house of Parliament in a big blow to Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of next year’s presidential election. The socialists and other candidates on the left are celebrating a historic victory gaining an absolute majority in the senate for the first time since 1958”

Spanish newspaper El País, however writes this trend is not about right or left. In an editorial it says the latest results in European elections show voters are reacting to the economic crisis.

“There is not a political turn, neither left nor right. This is only about making someone pay for the crisis that is ravaging Europe […] Across Europe, voters vote against a crisis that knows no borders...”

But in Britain -- Opposition Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander says Europe’s Left, despite parliamentary victories, is not as strong as it has been in the past because many countries have  right-wing heads of government:

“After the fall of the Berlin wall, there were a number of years when the center left was defeating the right. Now the center right seems to be defeating the left? Out of power in Germany, out of power in France, out of power in Italy, Alas again now, out of power in Sweden”

For French newspaper Le Figaro, the political situation in the UK will not change soon because the left lacks credibility.

“The Labour is struggling to find the springs of a rebound. If they are still by a few points ahead of the Conservatives in the polls, the performance is nothing extraordinary for an opposition party in the middle of a crisis and facing unprecedented austerity measures.”

In France, the Members of Parliament now have to designate a new president of the high chamber. If the left-leaning socialist candidate wins, he will be the third most powerful man in France.
