Steve Jobs called 2011 “the year of the iPad 2” - and he may not be finished making that so.
That’s according to rumors of an upgrade to the popular tablet circling around -- where else -- the Internet. This is My Next has the -- rumored -- details.
“...the new tablet is said to sport a double resolution screen (2048 x 1536), and will be dubbed the ‘iPad HD’.... This product is specifically said to not be the iPad 3, rather a complementary piece of the iPad 2 line. Think MacBook and MacBook Pro.”
Along with an improved display, some suspect the upgraded tablet will come bundled with new-to-device software and will target a specific niche market. Geek.com explains.
“One area in which the device will be marketed to is video and photo production. The iPad HD may be introduced with an iPad version of Aperture or Final Cut, although we hope the Final Cut version for iPad is received better than the company’s latest Final Cut Pro release.”
Though it’s just rumors at this point, some are already finding flaws in the presumed plan.
Techland’s Doug Aamoth suspects the upgrade will make the device too pricey.
“...the screen itself would be so expensive that it'd be impossible to hit the $500 starting point pegged to the consumer versions of the iPad...while the manufacturing process for such a screen may have gotten easier, the price of such a screen would likely still be prohibitively high for a consumer product.”
And CNET’s Josh Lowensohn suggests -- another version of the iPad 2 will lead to consumer confusion.
“Apple already has 18 different variations of the iPad 2, accounting for color, capacity, and 3G wireless networking options. Assuming that same configuration was placed on an ‘HD’ line, that could quickly confuse the situation even more.”
But Apple fans will likely have to wait until this fall for an official announcement on the topic. CNN’s John D. Sutter points out...
“This is all conjecture, of course -- which is part of Apple culture these days. The conventional wisdom says Apple will hold some kind of product announcement in September, when a new iPhone and possibly an iPad could be unveiled.”
