An American to play Princess Di? It seems so.
Emerging actress Jessica Chastain is ditching the red hair and throwing on a British accent to play the Princess of Wales in the biopic, ‘Caught in Flight’.
The movie will be about Diana’s secret two year affair with a Pakistani heart surgeon. It follows two other rumored biopics of the princess starring Kiera Knightley and Charlize Theron. However unlike those films, ‘Caught in Flight’ will portray a darker, less favorable side of the princess.
It seems there’s debate over the casting of an American actress as the iconic princess. The Huffington Post writes,
“It marks a bit of a potential risk, in that a beloved British figure will be played by an American; while Americans are routinely portrayed by Brits, it is more rare for the opposite to occur.”
Gawker however is not as subtle in their opinion, asking: who is stupid enough to take on the mega role?
“There is no one more needlessly deified on either side of the pond and no actress is going to be able to survive the scrutiny of such a performance … The British press are going to have a field day with this!”
Meanwhile, supporters of ‘The Help’ actress, including Hollywood.com, think that the role of the Princess couldn’t have gone to someone better.
“In just a short time, she has advanced to a Hollywood omnipresence, with roles increasing in size exponentially. Being cast as Princess Diana is as big an honor as an actress can earn, and many of us are glad to see the talented Chastain advancing with such speed.”
CinemaBlend is also jumping on the Chastain bandwagon, says she has more than proved herself with her previous roles.
“You can argue that Chastain doesn't look a whole lot like Diana, or maybe that a British actress ought to play the part. But the astonishing diversity of the roles she's played this year suggests that she's capable of pretty much anything, even tackling a role this tricky and iconic.”
The sure to be controversial film will go into pre-production in March, so fans of Diana or Chastain will have to wait until then.
