"I lost 54 pounds by reducing my daily calories and replacing my usual fast food with Taco Bell's drive through diet!"

Many fast-food chains are advertising healthy choices on their menus. Subway started the trend with Jared and now K-F-C and Taco Bell are trying to cash in on American's desire to lose weight.

We're looking at perspectives from The New York Times, KUSA-TV, NBC, and BNET.

Nutrition experts quoted in The New York Times are skeptical of how Taco Bell's new spokeswoman, Christine, really lost the weight, but more importantly, if the healthy choice options are really better for you.

“Even if they’re offering healthy fare, go into it with a wary eye — more likely they’re tricking you. The fast-food restaurants have not led the troops in healthy eating yet, so there’s no reason to believe they’re going to change their colors now.”

Even without cheese, Taco Bell maintains that this is not a weight-loss program and Christine's results were not typical. Dietitians on a Colorado NBC affiliate say the sodium content is still too high.

"Shin says we don't need to ban fast food, she acutally likes the fact that every place McDonald's, Wendy's even KFC offers nutritional information about their food online. And while these are better quick choices, what they lack is fiber and what they add is sodium."

Still on The Today Show, Men's Health Magazine Editor-in-Chief David Zinczenko suggests that these options could work for some people who are already in the drive-thru line.

“So, if you’re saying does a fast food diet work and you don’t go eat fast food, the answer is probably, you know, don’t start eating fast food, but if you’re already doing it and you make these healthier choices, as we can show you, you’re going to lose a lot of weight."

A BNET blogger says the fast food diet contradiction can make some sense in an on-the-go lifestyle.

"Back in the real world, where most of us can’t seem to help ourselves from eating junk food, it might not be such a bad thing to have lower-calorie options. Not ideal, but better than the alternatives."

So what do you think?  Are there really leaner fast-food options that can help you lose weight? Or is this -- force-feeding -- a fraud?
