Talk about your bouncing baby boy.
Janet Johnson and Michael Brown are the proud parents of one of the biggest babies ever born in Texas. Boston’s WCVB reports…
REPORTER: “Ten little fingers, ten little toes. But, little JaMichael is anything but little. They call him the Moose. Michael Brown says he’s OK with his son’s new nickname.”
MICHAEL BROWN, PARENT: “The doctor told us he was going to be about 12 but – when he pulled him out it was a different story.”
Baby JaMichael set a new state record – weighing in at 16 pounds one ounce and almost two feet long. The Huffington Post notes, while some are marveling at the baby’s girth, that size is less than optimal.
“The medical term for large infants is ‘macrosomia,’ literally meaning ‘large of body.’ These babies often have high blood sugar at birth, and a greater chance of obesity or diabetes later in life, doctors say.”
Nurses quickly placed baby JaMichael in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – where he is being carefully monitored – receiving breathing and eating assistance.
According to Babycenter.com, over 9 pounds and 15 ounces is considered “much larger than average.”
Fox News’ Dr. Manny Alvarez explains...
“Reasons for this may be that the parents are large people or there is a family history of large babies. …in Brown’s mother’s case, the factor is called gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar circulating in the mother. The sugar is easily transferred to the fetus in utero, which leads to weight gain.”
Baby JaMichael may be big -- but the current world record holder weighed in at 23 pounds 12 ounces. And that baby has held the top spot since 1879.
