Apple can’t hide anymore. The hyper-fast LTE 4G network is being tested on iPhones. Boy Genius Report broke the story.
“While we can’t confirm that the upcoming fifth-generation iPhone will be able to support 4G LTE, we can now exclusively confirm that Apple’s carrier partners are testing iPhone models with LTE capability.”
So how do they know? BGR found the clues buried in the firmware’s code.
And the trail heats up. CNET reports on another undeniable piece of LTE evidence.
“4G rumors got even hotter after Engadget tipsters reported a major Apple store was getting LTE 4G equipment installed by AT&T”
The pieces are there, but is now the right time for the 4G update? GottaBeMobile warns against a few of the networks’ issues, including one it sees as a big problem for Apple.
“Verizon is rapidly expanding its 4G LTE networkbut it still doesn’t cover the entire United States and that’s not going to fly with Apple.”
And they’re not alone. PC Mag sees yet another problem: the timing of the iPhone 5 release.
“To have the 'iPhone 5' ready for an October release, Apple needed to have started building the device months ago. Which would mean an LTE iPhone in 2011 would have a less sleek form factor and worse battery life than iPhone 4. Can you imagine Steve Jobs taking the stage at the Moscone Center in the fall and saying, 'This iPhone is thicker than the previous one'? Never happen.”
Another day another Apple secret uncovered. Kind of. Although most sources say not to expect LTE on iPhone 5. We will - as always - have to wait on Apple’s move.
