First it was boobquake — Iranian women with immodest dress were being blamed for causing earthquakes. Now it's tan skin that is causing a stir in Iran. Telegraph reports Tehran's police chief said women violating the spirit of Islamic Law with too tan skin will be arrested and imprisoned.
"The public expects us to act firmly and swiftly if we see any social misbehaviour by women, and men, who defy our Islamic values. In some areas of north Tehran we can see many suntanned women and young girls who look like walking mannequins."
The Young Turks say this law is ridiculous.
"Are you kidding me? Women who are tan? They're Persian. I know, I'm from the area. You know they used to say I had a perpetual tan, we look like this naturally. You want Persian women to get rid of their tan? What does that have to do with Islam?"
And some are asking will there be a "Boobquake"-style backlash to this edict? Salon.com and The National Post offer their suggestions.
"Might I recommend a single tool of protest? SPF 85."
"Maybe an International Wear Your Bikini to Work Day?"
The announcement comes ahead of the hottest months of the year.
