On Thursday, popular Iphone Application Hottest Girls –downloadable for a 1.99- upgraded their content from girls in lingerie and bikinis to full nudity. The upgrade ignited intense speculation, rapid downloads, and then disappointment.
The controversial application was removed from Apple’s App Store after only about 8 hours.
But what are the media saying about the removal of the app…Our research shows an emphasis on where apple should or should not draw the line.
First,
Mobile Crunch took the question to their readers- a poll on their website revealed
“3% of readers voted for “Bare breasts, nothing below the waist,” 18% called for “No nudity whatsoever” and 63% voted for “No limit. If it’s legal, who cares?”
But the
Daily Mail has an alternative view and says pornographic applications are dangerous.
'It is being packaged in a tempting way and will be disastrous for youngsters who are not equipped to deal with such content. … And what about the growing number of sex addicts?”
And
TechCrunch brings the perspective that permitting apps like these would actually allow app screeners to do their job.
“...allowing mature content like this should free up the App Store screeners to be able to focused on finding apps that are actually malicious or out of line, rather than being prude-police.”
And
CNN emphasized the business angle saying developers will continue to push the envelope-lured by the lucrative porn industry.
“… By Friday morning a search of the App Store for “Hottest Girls” couldn’t find the original, but did turn up 30 cheesy contenders.”
Should Apple keep a sharp watch on pornographic content? Or is this a non-issue because the IPhone can access any site on the web anyway?
