It’s a familiar story: each successive iPhone has sold more units than the last. Now Apple says-- in just 24 hours it has received more than a million preorders for the iPhone 4S.

In a press release, the company says it’s logged 400,000 more preorders for the 4S than it did the for its predecessor, the  iPhone 4. The latest iPhone keeps the same design as its predecessor-- all the upgrades are on the interior hardware and software.

The tech industry’s initial reaction to the updated gadget was disappointment. But The New York Times suggests the kneejerk dismissal was premature.

“Apple releases a new product. Some in the media and analysts quickly bemoan the new product... Then the new product breaks all previous sales records. Surprise, surprise.”

Wired points out-- a 5 on the end of the name isn’t important if the new device appeals to consumers.

“It seems that actual, paying customers are a little more insightful than whining, jaded tech writers. ...the general public saw the great new camera, a Star Trek-like talking assistant and a much faster computer, and then took out their wallets.”

And tech reporter Dan Gallagher tells The Wall Street Journal-- no matter the specs-- there’s been a quote “pent up demand” for a new Apple phone.

“It was clear that there’s still a lot of demand for an updated phone, even if it doesn’t have all the exterior changes. .... Clearly, especially compared to the 3GS and 3G, the iPhone 4S has a much wider distribution footprint available to it. So that’s a factor. But it has been 15 months since the last iPhone came out.”

But Business Insider reports-- the only reason Apple is selling more phones this year is because it and its carriers are ready for the rush.

“Apple and AT&T's sites crashed last year during iPhone 4 preorders. Even with computer problems, Apple still received 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders. This year Apple had a full day with no glitches. ... if you step back and look at this pre-order number, it's roughly in-line with last year's orders.”

The LA Times adds-- more carriers means more of a consumer base ready to pick up the latest iPhone.

“The iPhone 4S sales likely got a big boost from the fact that the new phone is available to more U.S. consumers than any previous iPhone version, with Sprint joining AT&T and Verizon in selling the gadget.”

Apple says the iPhone 4S will be available to customers on all those networks by the end of October.
