It’s the holiest of holy weeks for techies as the Consumer Electronic Show 2011 – CES 2011 – kicks off. Unlike in the past, Revision 3 reports one piece of technology is dominating this year’s show – the tablet.
PATRICK NORTON: “We are expecting like 42,000 android tablets.”
VERONICA BELMONT: “Yes there is going to be a lot of tablets, android tablets, Windows 7 tablets – also which we been waiting to for quite a while now. I am excited to what tablet offerings we’re going to see, in terms of, will they compete with the iPAD or will it be something consumers will be into, what are the price points going to be – all that.”
And even in this sea of tablets, the iPad was able to steal the show, when editors of Engadget accidentally stumbled upon an iPad 2 case.
It all happened when the editors were checking out an iPad case by Chinese manufacturer Dexim. The case had a very unique feature; it had a Bluetooth keyboard magnetically attached to a book-like sleeve. When they asked if they could place their iPad in it, the Dexim representative informed them that it would not fit because the case was for next generation iPad. So what does that mean? Engadget says...
“Well, there's certainly a consistent iPad 2 make that these Chinese manufacturers seem to be designing against, and while there's always the off chance that their info is wrong, it seems odd they'd go so far as to actually make the cases if they were unsure about their sources.”
GizmoCrunch says this discovery confirms a lot of the rumors floating around the web. Specifically, it confirms the new iPad will have a camera, larger speakers and will be shaped similar to an iPod Touch.
“While the first leak a couple weeks ago could possibly be called hoax, we now find a legitimate company at CES with a genuine case that they are saying is for the iPad 2. If this is just another hoax, then we must say they are really trying hard.”
Electronista says it is not surprising for South Asian companies to leak such heavily guarded secrets. Leaks from South Asian manufacturers have been increasing in the past few years and are sort of an early confirmation of the upcoming products.
“Although never truly confirmed, it's widely believed that key staffers at Hon Hai's Foxconn factories are routinely either bribed or strike illegal deals to supply information to small companies near the plants that want to get a head start on manufacturing.”
Phonedog estimates the new iPad will not hit the shelves till April 2011.
