Iowa now joins Massachusetts and Connecticut in legalizing same-sex marriage. Courts signed 380 marriage licenses on April 27, the first day couples were allowed to marry.
That was video from CNN. Hello I’m Charlotte Bellis, and you’re watching newsy.com.
The Iowa Supreme Court recently ruled that a same-sex marriage ban violated the Iowa constitution.
CNN followed one couple, who married within hours of the ruling.
“I suppose most straight couples don’t get emotional about a piece of paper, but this says legally you’re recognized. Legally we think you deserve equal rights. And that’s a big deal.” (CNN)
As many wonder what this decision in the nation’s heartland means for the rest of the country, a CBS News blog looks at Iowa’s history of influence.
“It struck down slavery in 1839 and segregation in 1868 and 1873 – and the state may not be quite as emblematic of Midwestern values as some might think.” (CBS)
CBS also asks: Is this a gay marriage tipping point?
“It's a big win because, coming from Iowa, it represents the mainstreaming of gay marriage. And it shows that despite attempts [to] stop gay marriage through right wing ballot initiatives, like in California, the courts will continue to support the case for equal rights for gays.” (CBS)
A University of Iowa poll taken before the ruling says 26 percent of Iowans support gay marriage. But an Iowa state senator tells FOX News he wants to amend the constitution, defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
“It’s never been brought to a vote of the people, and a constitutional amendment would do just that. The court took this on unilaterally without regard to the will of the people.” (FOX News)
The Des Moines Register spoke with one physician who was against the ruling.
“We just feel this type of judicial decision not only doesn't reflect what most Iowans believe, but it's also harmful to our state and to our country.” (Des Moines Register)
The Huffington Post talks with a supporter of the ruling, who says:
“I think it's fine. It is an issue of equal rights.” (Huffington Post)
A recent CBS/New York Times poll says 42 percent of Americans now support gay marriage, the highest since the poll began 2004. Are you in favor of same-sex marriage? Do you think the ruling will be overturned in Iowa? Do you think other states will now legalize gay marriage?
