An operation for the ages, several months in the making.  It’s being called one of the most top-secret and successful missions in United States history.

In a mansion about 100 kilometers outside of the city of Islamabad - ordered by President Obama himself - CIA operatives, special forces, and Navy Seals shot and killed Osama Bin Laden. Details from the White House continue to emerge... Fox News gives background on the location.

“When we saw the compound we were shocked by what we saw.  A compound on a large plot of land.  Secluded.  Eight times larger than other homes in the area.  Built in 2005 on the outskirts of the town center on a dirt road.  Well protected.” (Fox News)

MSNBC reports, this was an operation 8 months in the making.  A small handful of people knew about it.  Information was gathered from key informants.

"....detainees gave us information on couriers. One courier in particular had our constant attention. Detainees gave us his nom de guerre, his pseudonym, and also identified this man as one of the few couriers trusted by bin Laden.”

Here is the President himself describing what exactly happened in Pakistan.

“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.  A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.  No Americans were harmed.  They took care to avoid civilian casualties.  After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body. (The White House)

That small team of Americans included two helicopters.  One of which crashed due to mechanical failures  – which was then destroyed by troops for security reasons.  ABC News has more.

“Twenty to 25 U.S. Navy Seals under the command of the Joint Special Operations Command in cooperation with the CIA stormed the compound and engaged Bin Laden and his men...”

And as the White House debriefs more information is being released.  A correspondent for CNN reveals specifics on the actual fire fight.

“It was an extremely dangerous operation for the U.S. team to go in and not be detected.  They were around and inside Bin Laden’s compound for 40 minutes. ... In addition to Osama bin Laden at least 3 other people were killed. Two couriers, and one of Osama bin Ladens son.  And then we are also told by senior us officials that one women was killed inside the compound because she was used by one of the men around Osama bin Laden as a human shield.”
