A 16-year-old fights for his life after surviving his second plane crash in eight years.
High school basketball star Austin Hatch lost his father, Steven, and stepmother, Kim, on Friday. Fox reports the details.
“In Friday’s crash, the Hatches were flying to their summer home on Walloon Lake in Michigan, where Steven Hatch owned property, when a single-engine plane flew into a garage near the airport. It was the same home, by the way, the family was returning from when they crashed nearly eight years ago.”
In 2003, Austin’s birthmother, sister and brother were killed when another plane piloted by Steven Hatch clipped a light pole and crashed in Wells County, Indiana.
Austin is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
“16-year-old Austin is in a medically induced coma, suffering from a skull fracture and other broken bones. The standout Canterbury basketball player isn’t getting any worse, and as his coach says, he could be brought out of it tomorrow.” (WANE)
Indiana’s News Center spoke with the Hatch’s family pastor about the tragedy.
“8 years, having lost his mom and siblings in another plane crash – what an unbelievable testimony to perseverance and to character and to faith in God, so I’m very comforted by his story and encouraged to tell his story to people again. He’s a great kid.”
Austin Hatch recently committed to play basketball for the University of Michigan, the alma mater of his father and mother, just more than a week ago. Hatch’s high school coach Dan Kline tells the Detroit Free Press…
"He's tough. He'll battle this … It was his dream to get to Michigan. He still will."
The Associated Press reports the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
