Indian government officials are urging veteran activist Anna Hazare to end his hunger strike. Thursday marks the eleventh day of Hazare’s protest against government corruption. Though his health is declining, his mission stands strong.

“I can continue the fast for another 9 days.  Together, we will rebuild the nation.” (CNBC)

Support for Hazare’s mission is growing, with people rallying all over the country. He and his supporters are putting pressure on Parliament to pass the Jan Lokpal bill, which focuses on anti-corruption in the Indian government.

While the high-stakes strike is risky-- it also seems to be working. Social activist Nikhil Dey expalins-- it’s complicated.

NIKHIL DEY: “When things are moving forward so positively don’t call off the agitation, that one can understand … but certainly at least don’t put a person’s life in danger which could have a spiraling effect on all kinds of things across the country, it’s a very sensitive time.”

IBN reports-- Parliament has agreed to debate the Lockpal bill on Friday. But a reporter for NewsX notes-- the legislation isn’t a quick fix.

“Practically speaking, it might not be possible to pass the exact bill as it is now, but indefinitely they can take initiatives, and like hard initiatives that at least people can be sure the bill is going to be passed. Because now as you see the bill covers a lot of the county, judiciary, executive, legislative, everything, and a lot of laws need to be modified for that and it’s not simple to pass one that covers everything.”

But officials are weary of giving in. A retired judge explains to the Washington Post:

“‘If the government accepts Hazare’s demand today, what stops another charismatic leader from doing the same on other laws tomorrow? It sets a very dangerous precedent for our idea of democracy.’”
