Illegal Alien: Out of This World or Offensive?

This will be my last comment because obviously there is NO USE talking to a bunch of IGNORANT RACISTS. I understand what the word "illegal" means and I understand the gravity of it. I agree that when something is illegal, it is wrong and OBVIOUSLY against the law. But when poor, mistreated, unfortunate, hungry people have no other choice of survival but to migrate illegally somewhere else, then by all means, do it. You who disagree with me obviously don't have family members or acquaintances that are suffering these dire conditions. America is selfish and so its citizens only think about themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if all you guys cared about was yourself. I understand that ANYBODY who crosses the border illegally is an alien but answer me this, how many times have you heard the US refer to Europeans as "illegal aliens"? How many times have you heard Canadians be "aliens"? Not that many, if any, times because the US is not racist against those countries. It truly, truly saddens me that the US is going backwards and not forwards and that you all are the "future" of this country. Good thing my parents migrated here and that I was able to be born here so that I can rescue this country from going into a racist future. Don't worry everybody, a proud Hispanic "alien" will get this country out of its racist nature. You're welcome :)

You people REALLY don't get it... First off, a REALLY good friend of mine is half Hispanic, her mother coming LEGALLY from Mexico. Anyone calling this costume "racist" is just plain ignorant and trying to be dramatic. An illegeal alien can come from ANY country and the "alien" can be of any race. A white male illegeally crossing the border from canada would also be an "illegeal alien". It's a COSTUME but, this being America, morons have to imagine a deeper meaning, that the costume wasn't meant as a play on words, but meant as a hateful derogatory idea and that America should be ashamed for laughing at it. Umm this is stupid. WE have nothing better to put on the news? Look around at the number of whorish costumes with offensive sexual connotations there are this time of year. Why don't we talk about all of our daughters who dress up in "attractive" costumes, and our sons who actually think this kinda of behavior is ok??

Oh, and a few notes:
I agree with some of you on the other side of the fence (about this costume, that wasn't a racial slur, don't jump me) that some of the people commenting are incredibly intolerant. Me, I'd love to see us all get along, and for people to notice the color of someone's shirt before they take note of the color of someone's skin. And I'm not just jabbering here, I'm serious.
But (not that all of you are taking this stance) you can't be taken seriously if you try to fight intolerance with intolerance. Just as much as it's your right to speak your first language, worship as you please, be proud of your heritage, it's these other peoples right to not want to have anything to do with it. Confronting with anger makes just as much of a difference as saying "you white racist honkie"... you can't fight fire with fire with something like this. It only incites people, gives them even more of a reason, in thier minds, to hate you. So as much as we feel it's intolorable, it has to be tolerated. How can you preach tolerance if you won't follow it. Now I'm speaking about racism from individuals, not corporations, employers, governments, any intitution. In places like that, it should be snubbed out with extreme prejudice (it's amazing how much you pay attention to your choice of words when racism is the subject)

Okay. This is just plain stupid. I don't see anything racist about this costume, whatsoever. And it's not because I'm one of those people who has hidden racial views, it's because not one thing about this costume singles out any race, for good or ill. In order for something to be racist, either it needs to imply that a particular race is inferior in some way, or to imply that a race is superior over others(ie White Power groups) Heck, even to imply that a race is superior in a positive fashion is racist (ie all asians are good at math).

It's a orange jumpsuit and a green card. Germans, canadians, brits, french, and all people from countries that most white people can trace thier roots to... they all need green cards to be here. Not just mexicans, asians, or any other person from a clearly obvious racial background. So.... so far no one's been singled out, right? Just a prop still, yeah? The jumpsuit... well, no matter what race you are, if you're in prison, your wearing that jumpsuit. It's not like the hispanics get orange one, the blacks get yellow ones, the whites get black ones, whatever. So still.. no one's been singled out, right?

So the only way this thing is racist is if you're just super sensitive, and assume that it's implying something about some race or another. Which means your just like the black kid I knew in school. In the last 20 years the illegals have made a big impact in this nation and it's not for better. I have seen all! from great safe places to become dangerous. Jen-I think it is generally a good thing to respect the humanity of other people regardless of their immigration status. No one is making you learn another language but once you have mastered english it might be something you look into. It's called cultural exchange. Except it's the good kind where you get smarter, not the bad kind where you share your xenophobic ignorance with people from other countries. Henry David Hwang said " when we dehumanize our enemy we dehumanize ourselves" its not a matter of who you offend it is THAT you offend. In doing so you betray our values as a country,you ignore that core tenet that "all men are created equal". We are a country built on the idea of mutual respect for the inherent humanity of others. The reasons why this is racist don't make sense to you because you don't understand the negative effects your mentality has on society and individuals. They don't make sense to you because you don't tolerate difference, different opinions, different types of people, different ideas about what exactly America symbolizes. It's not that you DON'T understand why it is racist, It's that you CAN'T understand why it's racist. That mentality is why these little instances of intolerance exist in the first place. And you are exacerbating the problem by being so hateful in this forum. I truly appreciate Proud_Illegal and JusticeForALL because they obviously have good sense of judgment. This costume is offensive just like others that are on the market. Like I said earlier, I disagree with all sorts of costumes, and if it were up to me, they'd all be gone too. If we don't see any costumes as offensive, we are letting ourselves be stereotyped. Halloween passed already so I guess it's no big deal about the costume anymore, but the big picture (which is what I've been trying to fight all along) is racism. And RACISM and RACISTS are, unfortunately still out there.

Let me remind you that when Europeans came to this country, they brought with them all kinds of diseases that have stuck with the people up until now. If you're referring to the Swine Flu, any other country could have brought it as well. Besides, Americans have traveled to Mexico in this dire time and have brought back the disease with them. Why in the world would you go to a country that has a disease in it? Obviously they wanted to get infected. All countries have diseases and illnesses; cancers are everywhere and no one is safe from it. I'm not racist, as a matter of fact, I'm far from it. The reason why they can't come here or try to stay here legally is because:

1. They did not have enough status and education level.
2. Poor
3. They did everything back home to succeed and never got any where.
4. Open Borders
5. Besides many other things the reason number 1 is that some greedy americans give them jobs and pay them slavery salaries.

If you are here illegally... You have no rights because you are breaking a Federal law. You have to respect nations and go back to from whatever you came from... Brazilians don't like to be called Hispanic because of the language, race, and the sound of spanish language in Portuguse that sound like a very uneducated person talking in Portguese. Any Brazilian will understand spanish but Latinos will have a hard time understanding Portuguse. Yes! The Brazilian are very racist! Brazil is in South America and there is no shame in being called Hispanic. If they choose to not associate themselves with Hispanics, even better for us because we don't want negative people influencing us. My facts are firsthand experiences that my family and I have gone through and there is no stronger fact than that. I have not made up any of the things I have said and I stand by every single comment so far. It makes no difference to me where you worked or where you've met people, if you've never experienced what we "illegals" (I put in in quotes because I'm 100% legal) go through, then you have no right to say anything. When I used to work for some NBC stations I shaw many things that illegals and those things supports what I said. I don't know where are you getting the facts from... But I do know that many use tax-id to open accounts and use other too. Another thing is that Brazilians are not latinos or hispano!!! They speak Portuguse and they are based from Europe. Brazilians don't like to be called latinos because they think american spanish is an ugly language to them (from south to north). Ask them!!!

Perhaps from Brazil or so, but if not, I'm glad you're not as ignorant as I thought you were. You made a list of 10 "privileges" that illegals have, well I made a list in response: 1) yes, illegals and EVERYBODY else can walk into a hospital and get treated because that is the law. However, you forgot to mention the HUGE BILL that comes afterwards and the worries that illegals have to go through to pay that bill (especially when they're probably not working in an economy such as this one). 2)Driving without an insurance is the same penalty for ALL. You will get a ticket and go to court for it. As a matter of fact, illegals are the ones actually SCREWED because they will probably be sent to jail and then deported for not having papers (I'm sure that really excites you). 3)Not all illegals have jobs and not all citizens are without jobs. Life isn't fair, didn't your mom ever tell you that? 4)I love that you think our food is better than American food because it is. However, as you have mentioned, we are majorily poor and therefore don't have much money to buy food. If you call two tacos of carne asada with a Coke can as eating great, then we must eat DELICIOUS. 5)We don't have houses back where we came from, that's why we're here! We want to know what it feels like to actually possess a home. It's not our fault if you've made bad housing decisions and not have enough money to buy a house yourself. 6)Free education for ALL is what America has to offer; once again, the reason we are here. 7) This "fact" was the one that made me laugh the hardest because I don't know ANYONE who pays $50 a month for rent. First of all, I still don't get the whole "raca" thing but I guess that's your way of expressing yourself. To inform you, I am very educated so I know a lot about what I'm talking about. Like someone said earlier, there are other countries that were founded by immigrants but they are not as racist as this country is. What I've been trying to say is that there are still people here in the US that are racist. Illegal and legal immigration are a different topic that I would love to get into but I wouldn't want to offend or hurt anybody. The point I'm trying to get across is that if people see nothing wrong with this costume, then there is something wrong with that person. Racism, unfortunately, lies deep within the roots of this country and it saddens me that there are people like you who bring out those roots. This is a matter of racism against minorities and that is why the whole illegal immigration comes into play. Illegal immigrants help, work, learn, contribute to this country and people don't even realize that. You think we can get health insurance and coverage faster or easier than citizens? Wow. I would love for you guys to be illegal or at least to be treated as an illegal for just one day, so you can experience firsthand the put-downs and racism that we face EVERYDAY. We are here to work and yes, there are criminals that are Hispanic. But what race doesn't have criminals locked up in jails? In California, the majority of criminals in jails are probably Hispanic but that's because they live there. You think there are more locked-up Hispanics in Montana, for example, than there are Caucasians? Of course not. Racism is around us and I hope that one day, people like you will realize that this IS a NEW ERA and that we need to change our old ways.

I dont think its a matter of jus hating people becuase their illegal. I can completely agree they greatly contribute to our country in a great way, but my grandmother had to go thru so much crap to come to this country, my hole family for that matter. I work hard n i pay taxes everyday, and struggle with no insurance. The problem is although they are contributing, its not equal, in what way are you supporting the country u love? THey can get insurance and a job quicker than i can and im born here, thats were i find there to b a problem.

That's what I'm saying, we have to be illegal inmigrants because we are denied the required documentation (green card), start punishing the big companies that hire illegals, and you're talking about big corporations, they have responsible, dependable, cheap labor with illegal workers, and there's not only big companies how about, regular households that need our services (babysitters, housekeepers, handymen, etc.) I personally know "white kids" that love more the babysitter than their own mother, I personally know white kids that are bilingual (spanish-english) because it's the babysitter that first teach the kids their first words, and the parents couldn't be more happy, they can go to work and in fact just forget about the kids because they know they're in good hands... we just want to work and provide for our families like anybody else, USA is the best country in the world, and there is enough of everything for everybody...

I have seen a lot worse 'illegal alien' costumes before. Is it offensive? Sure. But most major Halloween stores sell Jesus, Mary, and Joseph costumes too, and the church hasn't raised a big fuss... yet. People dress up like 'rednecks', 'gangsters', and a plethora of other stereotypes for Halloween. I think the mentality behind it is pretty offensive but whatever, people can wear what they want. It's not as bad as some of the other things I've seen. The other day I saw not one but two people in black-face one was flava-flav, the other was President Obama as an ACORN volunteer--my mind-exploded.
