Movies run into all sorts of trouble while shooting. Usually, the trouble doesn’t involve a SWAT team. But in Hungary, Brad Pitt’s new flick, World War Z is on ice until they sort out a weapons snafu. U.S. Weekly is leading the coverage.
“On Monday, a SWAT team raided a Budapest warehouse holding weapons being used in Pitt's upcoming zombie movie World War Z. … Police seized 85 fully-functional weapons, most of which were automatic, military-style assault rifles.”
Well that will draw some attention. The entertainment media was all over the story early on, but it seemed like they couldn’t decide if Pitt and his crew were victims or idiots.
US Weekly headlines that Pitt was ‘raided’ by a SWAT team...
Aceshowbiz leads with how furious Pitt allegedly is about the interruption…
But over at The Houston Chronicle, they skipped speculation all together and let readers know the guns were illegal straight away.
…and The Post-Chronicle quotes a Hungarian official off the bat, calling it a “Disaster Waiting to Happen.”
The production crew claimed the guns were props and not fully functional. Hungarian SWAT officers determined that wasn’t true, and moved to seize the weapons. Most outlets are posting the quote from the director and deputy director of Hungary’s Anti-Terrorism Unit, obtained by US Weekly.
“Guns like these are highly illegal to transport even if they were to be used as stage guns, which hopefully they weren’t.” (ABC)
The guns in question ranged from AK-47s to sniper rifles. While Pitt wasn’t around when the raid happened, Aceshowbiz quotes a source close to the actor who says he isn’t taking kindly to being a counter-terrorism target.
“"The film is already over budget and over schedule. Brad is furious,’ so said the source.”
Pitt is both starring in and producing the flick. A writer for Mercury News doesn’t take the whole thing too seriously, instead poking fun at the star, who has often taken heat for his unconventional off screen behavior.
“Maybe Pitt's sons, Knox, Pax, Maddox, Xerox, Clorox and Ajax, have some water pistols they could loan Dad.”
World War Z is set to hit theatres December 2012.
