Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is out of the hospital and back in his home country after a lengthy stay in Cuba where he was undergoing cancer treatments.

“He was first operated on in Havana, Cuba in December last year. It was his fourth operation in an 18-month period for cancer which was first diagnosed in 2011.”

The Daily Mail reports doctors have been working to vigorously remove tumors from his pelvic region, though neither Chavez nor the Venezuelan government has disclosed the type of cancer the Socialist leader’s contracted.

The 58-year-old announced his return in a series of Twitter messages early Monday morning.

The first translating to: “We have arrived back in the land of Venezuela. Thank you Lord!! Thanks to my beloved people!! We will continue our treatment here.”

In a third tweet he said, “I’m clinging to Christ and trusting in my doctors and nurses. Onwards victory always!! We will live and we will overcome.”

His release comes three days after the government released the first pictures of Chavez since his surgery in December.

One picture show him reading the Community Party paper “Granma” and Thursday’s date -- February 14, 2013 -- is visible.

“He is relaxing and trying to... spend time with his family is what he’s been telling everybody as well. He said he will continue his treatment at home.”

The LA Times reports Chavez landed in Venezuela at 2:30 Monday morning and then checked into the military hospital in Caracas.

Chavez has been president for 14 years and was re-elected for another six last October.
