What’s brown and white and available almost nowhere? Android 4.0—or Ice Cream Sandwich. But with a new announcement from HTC, that could be changing soon. The phone company’s blog says, “Here’s the scoop..”

“The following HTC devices are confirmed to get a tasty treat of Ice Cream Sandwich: DROID Incredible 2 by HTC, HTC EVO 3D, HTC Vivid …”

And those aren’t the only ones, 16 devices in total will be able to receive the upgrade to Android 4.0.

Some of its cooler features include; face unlock, which allow users to unlock their phones with a picture of their faces, improved user interface and voice typing...which is exactly what is sounds like.

The tech world is abuzz about HTC’s announcement. TechCrunch.com explains why...

“Though it’s far and away the best iteration of Android to date, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has only made its way to a very small percentage of the Android population. I mean, we’re talking less than five percent, and that’s generous.”

But not all news is good news....HTC provides no real timeline or release dates, only saying it’ll take a while to get the update on every carrier. Mobiledia says Google has a lot of good ideas but making Android an open source operating system wasn’t one of them...

“As a result, instead of going head-to-head with Apple and iOS 5 with top-of-the-line devices running ICS, Google stands by as the 4S enjoys the best sales in the history of the iPhone, due in part to facing competition running the outdated Gingerbread OS.”

Outdated is almost an understatement—Gingerbread is version 2.3, and Ice Cream sandwich? 4.0. TIME reports HTC Sensation and Sensation XE will receive Ice Cream Sandwich first, and can expect the update within the next few weeks.
