How young -- is too young?
That’s the big question surrounding a model whose recent appearance in French Vogue -- stirred up controversy.
The model is France’s 10-year-old Thylane Blondeau, daughter of a former amateur soccer player and a television personality. (Images: Vogue (France))
In their coverage, ABC reporters made no qualms about their feelings on the topic.
DAN HARRIS, ABC: “A lot of little girls like to play dress up, put on Mommy’s clothing and makeup, but what you are about to see, goes well beyond that. …Where are we heading, a lot of people asking that this morning.”
“We only showed some of the more demure shots. Some of these photos were inappropriate for putting a young child in what could very easily be called ‘sexualized positions.’”
The Vogue spread and other photographs featuring little Thylane have sparked outrage across the Internet.
A writer for Mommyish says -- the problem isn’t that she’s a young model -- it’s how she’s being portrayed.
“These photographs of Thylane are inappropriate because they not only suggest the presence of an adult viewer … but they also invite said viewer to regard her as having an adult’s sexuality.”
It’s complicated.
That’s what a writer for feminist website Jezebel says.
And while she doesn’t think the fashion industry’s intentions are quote- “honorable” -- she wonders if the problem also has to do with the audience.
“If looking at some of her many, many fashion photographs makes me feel creepy, is it because of the way the magazines and photographers have chosen to present her, or is it because of something I’m reading into the images?”
And in a response to that article, Movie City News agrees and says -- maybe some of the outrage -- is the result of differing social norms on either side of the pond.
“There are lots of European immigrants in our area, and it’s not unusual at the beach down the street to see totally naked babies and toddlers, and young girls running around only in boy trunks or bikini bottoms with no top on... I don’t have a problem with it, but I have seen other moms raise an eyebrow or talk loudly about it being ‘inappropriate.’ Really?”
Finally -- in its coverage, The Daily Beast looked into the legality of a 10-year-old in arguably sexual fashion spreads.
The writer notes, young models like 12-year-old Elle Fanning have also made headlines for similarly controversial pictures. The answer:
“Though runway models have an age minimum of 16, there are no regulations that dictate age in editorial spreads and ads."
