With fluctuating fuel prices and calls for energy independence, hybrid vehicles are one option for drivers who want to save money and leave less of an impact on the environment...

Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching a special earth day edition of Newsy.com. We’re bringing you different perspectives on the future of hybrid vehicles...

Discovery Channel shows us how a hybrid works...

“The hybrid car has an electric motor that provides additional power to the gasoline engine, greatly reducing the amount of gas burnt. The electric motor is connected to a battery, which recharges when you slow down or put on the brakes. A car that would normally get 25 miles per gallon of gas could get 40-50 with much less pollution.” (Discovery Channel)

The Los Angeles Times reports on the longevity and the efficiency of hybrid vehicles. It highlights the first fleet of hybrid taxis out of San Francisco.
Each one traveled 300-thousand miles...

“The retiring hybrid cabs also have shown that, even on San Francisco’s notorious hills, the regenerative brake system’s brake pads last far longer than nonhybrid brakes … they also have saved drivers about $9,000 a year, depending on gas prices and number of shifts driven.” (The Los Angeles Times)

The Boston Globe reports on a group of cab drivers suing the city of Boston. They want to block a regulation requiring the drivers buy new hybrids...

“The owners are essentially saying, ‘Look, we’re not against going green, we’re against going broke.’ ” (The Boston Globe)

WTSP in Tampa Bay Florida reports lower fuel prices are keeping some hybrids off the roads...

“A lot of the reasons for the fact that hybrid sales are down right now have to do with gas prices. Of course last summer, they were at an all-time high and now they’re closer to two bucks a gallon in most parts of the country, so a lot of people are deciding, “hey, it doesn’t pay right now to go with a hybrid because gas is already so cheap.” (WTSP)

CNN looks at some other factors impacting the hybrid industry.

“On the good news side, that’s simply the fact that non-hybrid cars are getting so much better. Even without going with hybrid technology, cars can get very good fuel economy and it’s getting better. … On the other side, there’s just that fact that batteries cost money and there are limited number of companies that can reliably manufacture the kind of batteries needed for those cars.”

Looking abroad, the New York Times reports China is joining the green auto trend.

The Asian giant is aiming to become the world’s leading producer of hybrid and all-electric vehicles within three years. Its goal is to reduce urban pollution and to decrease dependence on oil.
