Voters in Maryland and Maine approved a measure legalizing same-sex marriage.

CNN: “I cannot emphasize what a historic night this is. It's the first time it's been put up and passed. … This is watershed moment for the gay rights movement.”

AOC
Same-sex marriage has appeared on the ballot in various states before, but this the first time it has been approved by a statewide popular vote. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow puts it into perspective.

“When same-sex marriage rights have gone before the state's 32 previous instances in america, the record for the gay rights side of it has been 0-32. that losing streak has been broken tonight...”

Maine and Maryland join the previous six states where same-sex marriage has been legalized. This is the first election since the President’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, and the president of the Human Rights Coalition tells The Washington Post that this could change the dynamic of debates going forward.

“It takes away the talking points that anti-marriage activists use day in and day out: that this issue can’t win at the ballot box.”

In addition to Maine and Maryland, marriage equality was also on ballots in Washington and Minnesota. As of early Wednesday morning, the results weren’t yet certain.
